the Brickstone Hostel
What We Are
We are neither a hotel nor a youth hostel, but a great alternative to both: it is a place for everyone who appreciates an open, colourful, uncomplicated and warm atmosphere, who likes to meet people from different corners of the world, who likes a little more space than only the hotel room, who would like to cook something for him- or herself, who is looking for a “home away from home” – and that at low prices.
Coffee and tea for free whenever you like, hospitality and a smile! Regardless of whether you come to (Neu-)Ulm with a backpack, a bicycle, for sightseeing, a conference, a visit, a job interview, if you are looking for an apartment or if you come for anything else – we look forward to seeing you! As we are a very small hostel, we are particularly suitable for single travellers, couples and small, quiet groups of up to 4 people.
The prices are affordable because you share the bathroom, kitchen, living room and possibly also a room (dorm) with other guests. The bathrooms, kitchen, shared rooms and all other shared areas are thoroughly cleaned every day.

Die Brickstone Family
Who We Are
Anja
The Founder Who Loves to Travel
After many trips in and around the world, she made her dream come true and opened in 2007 the first (and so far only) backpacker hostel in Ulm / Neu-Ulm: the Brickstone Hostel.
With her roots in Blaubeuren, she is very familiar with Ulm and the surrounding area and even after many years in the “hostel business”, this is still her passion. Whether at the reception, cleaning or renovating and repairing – she is mostly out and about somewhere in the house
Rie
The Traveller Who Loved to Stay
Reception, competent answers to your questions and cleaning – just like Anja, Rie is responsible for everything in the hostel. She comes from Japan, but has been living in Germany for many years now and has found in Ulm her “home away from home”.
In 2009, she travelled in Germany and stayed as a guest in the Brickstone Hostel. Many years later, in 2016, she came back and started to work with us, which we are very happy about!
She worked in hotels for many years but what she loves so much here in the hostel is the easy and uncomplicated contact with our guests, the conversations with them and the many interesting (life) stories and sometimes adventurous travel experiences they share with us.
Milad
Our "Mini Jobber"
Originally from Iran, he helps us to clean the hostel at the weekends – until everything sparkles and flashes.
During the week he has got another job and is taking his high-school diploma at the evening grammar school, at the weekend he is spreading his energy and good mood in the hostel. A friendly “Good Morning”, some chatting and Iranian hospitality included, of course.

Sustainable
We Love it Green …
sustainable
We Love it Green …
The environment is important to us – we get warm water and heating from a heat pump and on sunny days even 100% CO2-neutral from our solar system. Since 2023 we are proud owners of a photovoltaic system to generate our own electricity.
The rest of our electricity we obtain from renewable energy sources, we separate waste and reduce the consumption of energy and resources for example by the use of sustainable cleaning agents and toilet paper, LED lamps, water-saving fittings …
Find out more at the reception and help us with it – it’s not that difficult and in the end also many small things result in something big. You will also find various small signs in the hostel with instructions on what YOU can do.
Most of the food that we provide free of charge in the guest kitchen is organic and / or fair trade (coffee, sugar, salt …).
We are very happy if you arrive by public transport or even by bike or on foot and we will be glad to give you tips on local public transport, bike rental, etc. once you are here.
The city of Ulm is also trying to promote car-free tourism and sustainable mobility in order to make a contribution to climate protection and has prepared a well-done public transport map (city center + region) with, above all, interesting and relevant information for tourists.
You can take a look at it online or you can get a plan from us at reception.
